  Fairies in the Bay

Every so often we are offered a friend’s place on Pender Island. There is much magic in the land here which stretches out to encompass all the other Gulf Islands, as well as the beautiful Pacific Ocean that surrounds them. I have encountered many elementals and enchanting trees; in particular the Arbutus tree which grows only on these coastal islands and up to eight miles inland (although I have rarely seen them on the mainland).

These trees are home to many beings both in and out of our realm and are so graceful about offering themselves up as hosts while at the same time bearing the often intense coastal elements.

After a wonderful day of exploring nature here, we had gone to bed fairly early. Around 4:00 am I awoke with a bit of a start and could not go back to sleep, so I went outside to listen to the water and enjoy the sound of it’s gentle lapping on the rocks below. I was so enjoying this when all of a sudden the mouth of this small bay suddenly lit up with bright lights going on and off like fireflies just below the surface! What an incredibly enchanting sight!

I was mesmerized for quite some time watching them blinking away like Christmas lights when it came to me that these were ocean fairies!! I had heard about them in Dora Van Gelder’s book “The Real World of Fairies” but I never thought I would see them with my own eyes. I actually had to rub them to be sure I wasn’t dreaming!

After what seemed like minutes and yet hours at the same time, I realized I needed to go back to sleep so I went upstairs and back to bed. Not four minutes later it felt like a giant semi truck had hit the rocks the house was sitting on and my husband and I both bolted out of bed. It turns out there was a 4.4 level earthquake on the island directly beside ours (Galiano Island) which is only a mile or two across the bay. Was this why I woke up so suddenly?  Was this why the fairies lit up the bay… as an early warning system? It certainly felt like both were true. The strange thing about this earthquake is that there was no aftershock. No big waves crashing down below, no keys rattling or pictures swinging. Just a big bang and then stillness. So weird.

This is my story about the Fairies in the Bay. If this story appeals to your curiosity, you may want to read “The Real World of Fairies” and learn more about water fairies as the author describes them in some detail. This book was written in the 1970s and even at that time the number of water fairies was beginning to dwindle due to growing population and the impurity of the water.

I hope your awareness of the elemental world has grown through the telling of this story. I also hope your perceptions have opened regarding the beings of this realm and how they long to join us in dreaming in a magical world we can all live in together with joy, harmony and mutual respect, for the benefit of each of us and this radiant planet we call home.
